DRESS syndrome with Plasmapheresis

This case reports describes a 15-year-old girl, presenting with unusual behavior, dysphasia and emotional liability. She was diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis and subsequently developed drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome, a medication-induced adverse reaction with a significant mortality rate. The exact trigger of this patient’s DRESS syndrome remains unknown but is thought to be as a result of exposure to ceftriaxone, omeprazole or acyclovir.  She was treated with plasmapheresis because she did not respond to either high-dose steroids or intravenous immunoglobulins; this successfully treated her autoimmune encephalitis and DRESS syndrome. The author suggests that plasmapheresis can be a safe and effective treatment within the context of other autoimmune conditions, such as DRESS syndrome.

About the Editor in Chief

Prof. M B Imran, (MBBS, MSc, MS, FRCP(Edin), PhD) is a young scientist and physician in nuclear medicine. He is a recipient of Asia Oceania Distinguished Young Investigator's award from Japanese Society Nuclear Medicine. He is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Medical Case Reports, devoted to publishing case reports from all medical disciplines.

"It gives me great pleasure to be communicating with you all. Indeed as Editor designate, I feel honored to shoulder this important responsibility. I hope with the cooperation of this dynamic group of young researchers the publication of a new online journal will be equally beneficial for practicing physicians and medical researchers. Rome was not built in a day, as they say, so it is planned and hoped that gradual and steady progress will be observed in coming months."
